The Department of Applied Sciences of Education

The Department of Applied Sciences of Education is one of the five departments of the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, and it is one of the largest departments of the University of Helsinki. In addition to high-level research, the aim is to educate professional teachers for early childhood education, basic education and upper secondary education. The Department also co-operates with the Teacher Training Schools and a network of field schools.

National LUMA Centre

The national LUMA Centre is an umbrella organisation coordinated by the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki to bring schools, universities and industries together.

The aim of the LUMA Centre is to promote the learning, studying and teaching of natural science, mathematics, computer science and technology on all levels. The LUMA Centre works together with schools, teachers, students of education and several other cooperation partners in order to achieve its goals.

The Viikki Teacher Training School, University of Helsinki, (Viikki TTS)

Given the goal of highly qualified teacher education and the roles relating to it, Viikki TTS co-operates intensively with the other departments of the university. Teacher Training Schools also have the task of developing good quality of teaching and curricula planning, in addition to promoting innovative training periods for university students and being committed to modern information technology.

Our 140-year old traditions support our efforts, while they also urge us to step forward boldly. Consequently, we are able to develop new learning and working methods, materials, in-service training and teamwork. The Viikki TTS also has applied and other research. International activities, projects and networking as well as sustainable development and creativity are fresh ways to promote new and more advanced learning – this is our lifestyle.

The Viikki Teacher Training School

 

Helsingin normaalilyseo (Norssi) Teacher Training School, University of Helsinki

Helsingin normaalilyseo, also known as Norssi, belongs to the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences in the University of Helsinki as one of its two training schools. It comprises the 7th to 9th grades of the comprehensive school and the upper secondary school. Subject teacher students within the Department of Applied Sciences of Education perform their teaching practice in our school. Helsingin Normaalilyseo offers a multifaceted environment for teaching practice extending outside the school.

With regards to research, as part of the university the school has good contacts with different departments which offer visits and study opportunities. Learning by research is a natural way of approaching a subject. In so doing, the teacher trainees can put into practice their knowledge of theory as well as their experience and skill in doing research. Being able to guide others to learn is one of the central aims of practice.

The Palmenia Centre for Continuing Education is an independent institute of the University of Helsinki. It provides continuing education, research and development services. National Centre for Professional Development in Education (Opeko)

Opeko is an expert organisation for continuing education in the field of teaching and operates on networking principles. Sibelius Academy – Department of Music Education

Sibelius Academy is the only music university in Finland and one of the biggest higher institutions of music in Europe. Working in active collaboration with the Finnish society, it is committed to fostering of musical culture in performance, creative art, pedagogy, and research of music.
