Electronic Format

Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced by codes when your article is processed. It is, therefore, not important how you display titles, headings, etc. as long as you do so in a consistent manner throughout the manuscript. Do use your word processor's facilities for bold face, italics, super-and subscripts, etc. as appropriate - e.g. use italics for species names rather than underlining. You may also mark headings with standard heading styles in word processors such as Word (but remember that the SIL Proceedings generally use only two or three levels of headings). Use single, non-justified columns without setting any hyphenation options. When creating tables, use tabs, not spaces, to align columns.

Keyboard Accuracy

Please ensure that you distinguish between the digit 1 and the letter 1 and, similarly, between the digit 0 and the letter 0. Do not use space indents - use tabs for indents, e.g. at the start of subsidiary paragraphs - and do not use any indent for the first paragraph following a section heading.

Use your word processor's spell checker to ensure that your manuscript is as accurate as possible before submission. Manuscripts in English may use either English spelling or American spelling; you should not mix American and English spellings in the one manuscript.

Diskette or CD

Your file is valuable. Take no risks and use a new diskette. Both Double Density and High Density 3.5" (9cm) diskettes are acceptable as long as the diskette has been formatted correctly. If using a CD, use a recordable CD (CD-R) NOT a ReWritable CD (CD-RW). Save your file in the native format of the word processor used. Alternatively, you may save the file as an RTF file in addition to the native word processor file. Please do not save files in plain ASCII or 'plain text' format as this normally strips all the superscripts, italics, etc. from the manuscript. Do not leave any non-essential files on the disk - only the text of one complete article plus the associated tables and any figures as graphics files (see below for information on graphic formats). If more than one diskette is required number them in sequence.

It is crucial that the hard copy printout and the electronic version (on diskette or CD) are identical.

Labelling

Do not forget to label the diskette or CD with your name, the name of the file and the name of the SIL session in which the paper is to be presented. Please complete the form included with this document and enclose it with the diskette or CD and the last revised version of your paper.

Graphics

All figures must be submitted in electronic form. Both scanned illustrations and computer generated drawings are acceptable. The 2001 SIL proceedings will be printed in black and white and therefore use shading and hatching which allow the reader to distinguish between various shades of grey in the final printed document.

As it is not possible to guarantee that your graphics files can be used, it is also necessary to provide a hard copy version of your figures in camera-ready form. Please allow for reduction of the figures to the final page size - any text should be at least 8 pt after reduction.Top
