Peter Nelde
Peter Nelde is professor in chair in general and German linguistics at the Catholic University of Brussels and is since 1977 head of the Brussels Research Centre on Multilingualism. He initiated interdisciplinary research in contact linguistics, edited the International Handbook on Contact Linguistics (1996/7) and conducted projects on linguistic minorities (Euromosaic) and language policy (Monolingualism is curable). He lectured as a visiting research professor a.o. at New York State University, Stanford, Berkeley, Budapest, Pretoria, Tokyo, Montréal and Paris and developed a structural plan for European Studies at the universities of Leipzig and Vienna. He published amply in the field of sociolinguistics, edits in and is member of the editorial board of leading journals and monographs. He was president of ABLA (Belgian Association of Applied Linguistics) and organised several world conferences. His special research interests are multilingualism, language planning and ecolinguistics.
